From R&D to material exploration and play testing, every aspect of this modular toy was meticulously designed with dog in mind

OBJECTIVE

Design a dynamic outdoor dog toy line that combines vibrant colors, rugged durability, and interactive features to ensure endless fun and excitement for energetic pups, making outdoor play an adventure they’ll always look forward to.

BARK

SUPER CHEWER

I helped lead the design and development of Super Chewer, BARK’s line of durable toys built specifically for dogs that destroy traditional plush toys.

The challenge was to create products that could withstand aggressive play without losing the personality, humor, and storytelling that made BARK distinctive. I worked across concept development, material exploration, play patterns, durability testing, engineering, and production to create toys that felt more like designed objects than generic rubber products.

A major focus was developing new constructions, materials, textures, treat features, and multi-stage play experiences that gave dogs more ways to interact with each toy while meeting strict safety and durability requirements.

I also helped shape the broader creative direction of the line, building cohesive collections around seasonal themes, characters, and unexpected product ideas while working closely with merchandising, sourcing, engineering, testing, and manufacturing teams to bring each concept to market.

Super Chewer became an important extension of the BARK brand, proving that highly functional, performance-driven products could still have the same wit, character, and emotional appeal as the company’s plush toys.

In the initial stages, form studies and models were created to test the concept. The original idea was to have interchangeable parts, allowing the creation of fun characters with various combinations of lower body and head shapes. Each toy also has a unique function: some are extremely durable, others are designed to float in water, and some are more aerodynamic. This mix-and-match feature incorporates all these aspects.
